Ocean Beach Fire Pits - Installed!

On the morning of April 14, under cloudy, rainy skies 2 artist fire pits were installed on Ocean Beach. By afternoon, the sun was shining. Since that date, another 12 less artistic but highly functional fire pits have been installed and within the next couple of months 3 more artist fire pits are expected to be installed (2 Seastars and 1 more Flower bloom). If you haven't seen the existing firepits, they are between stairwells 15 and 20, towards the northern end of the beach.

Already the changes can be seen as fires have been concentrated largely in the pits and the amount of trash and debris on the sand appears less than before. Now that pits are installed, the real challenge of maintaining them begins. Right now, Surfrider has been taking the charge on the maintenance but could definitely use help. Park Police have begun enforcing the policy that bonfires must now occur within the designated pits. Ocean Beach Foundation is working to get even more installed as it will be difficult to meet demand during warm summer nights.
